The H2Joe will be the dehydrated coffee addicts new favorite itemThe H2Joe will be the dehydrated coffee addicts new favorite itemI genuinely believe everyone has one good invention in them. Unfortunately, most of us rarely get the chance to share our earth-shattering practical additions to society with the public. For example, I accidentally invented skittles gum back in fourth grade a whole year before the product officially hit shelves in 2006.I hope fellow prodigies, Brett Moddy and John Anthony wont be made to share in my misfortune of timing. The two are the Chicago based inventors behind the H2Joe. Moody and Anthony have a Kickstarter going to ensure their goal. The team behind the aspiring gam e-changer were inspired by their own daily frustrations when they first conceived the H2joe.Moody states For years, weve complained about having to fill two bottles each morning - one for coffee and one for water. Dorothy disliked having to juggle two bottles as she made her way out the door. I often forgot my water bottle altogether but had no problem refilling my coffee mug all day long. By the time I got home, Id be caffeinated, dehydrated, and feeling guilty that I didnt make the time to drink water. No one in the corporate world can be deaf to these sympathies. Considering 80% of Americans say they dont drink enough water a day, a convenient incentive to carry it around easier is pretty nifty.Little hacks that better equip us to meet daily nutritional requirements while making us more energized and productive cant be overlooked.Lugging a big cumbersome water bottle around is unwieldy enough on its own. But a bottle that can also safely bear our favorite morning jolt juice, whil e keeping it hot (for up to eight hours) is a fair compromise. A compromise that additionally see us drink more water throughout the day.Anything to needle the malaise that preys upon satisfying-productive days. CAD Not Just for Engineers
CAD Not Just for Engineers CAD Not Just for Engineers The CAD programs that engineers use every day for highly technical konzept and implementation of engineering concepts have otzu sich, far flung uses. Fashion designers, video game creators, landscapers, and interior designers have used the programs to make their work more efficient, and more transparent to their clients.Kathy Dickinson, for instance, has knit, sewn, and crocheted clothes for dolls since she was a child. As an adult she started a small home-based business selling vintage patterns. Her business, Haleas Doll Clothes grew steadily from her home in Averill Park, New York, helped along by the rise of the internet, which gave doll lovers the world over a new means to find each other. Unfortunately, though, a series of seizures left her with trembling hands.Kathy Dickinson turned to CAD to streamline doll clothes and doll pattern making. She sells patterns over the Internet.I used to be a really good artist, but now I can t hold a pencil without a problem, Dickinson said. She found a CAD program that that she thought could help her produce her miniaturized dresses. I can draw basic things, though on the shaky side, import them into TurboCAD, and hold a mouse to clean them up, she said.To create her designs, she first draws a preliminary pattern with pencil, then cuts it from paper and drapes it on her intended doll. If it drapes correctly, she imports the design to create the first simple pattern. She can then adjust for the amount of material that will accommodate the seam, called a seam allowance. If youre good, it should only take you a couple of tries, she said. One Maine jeweler uses TurboCAD software when designing custom jewelry. He creates a 2-D model to specify dimensions and a 3-D one to show clients how the piece will look.Alfred Kypta, of Lewiston, Maine, had a head start on Dickinsonhe worked with CAD for years as an electrical engineer. So it was only natural for him to turn to CAD for hi s other passion designing and making jewelry.Kypta has since started a retail jewelry business, where he continues to design and produce custom pieces, like rings or brooches, mainly from gold, silver, or platinum. He first draws the pieceas he envisions itin two dimensions in the software system to specify exact dimensions. He then creates a three-dimensional model from the 2-D drawing. The 2-D is for when I actually build the piece. Its like building a house, he said. You have the 2-D blueprint and you construct the house from those drawings.Kypta uses the 3-D model as a preview for potential customers. Its amazing how, when people see what theyll be getting, its so much easier to sell the piece, Kypta said.CAD, of course, is an essential tool for architectsnot only for straight schreibstube buildings, but for quirkier projects as well.Take the aquarium project undertaken by the design firm Chermayeff, Sollogub, and Poole (CSP). The firm used Architectural Desktop software from Aut oDesk, as well as the AutoCAD program more familiar to mechanical engineers, to design a 60,000-square-foot expansion to the National Aquarium of Baltimore. The expansion will include a habitat for crocodiles, fish, and birds indigenous to Australia, as well as space for retail stores and a restaurant. To design the Iowa Rainforest Project, the 600-foot-long greenhouse-style building in Coralville, Iowa, the firm used an Autodesk offering called Autodesk VIZ, which allowed them to visualize how the final project would look. A project of that size requires an image of equal impact, said Tom Jin, Associate with CSP. Visualization was previously a four-step process. Designers and graphic designers constructed wire frames, then traced, scanned, and rendered them. Now, a single designer can generate stunning views. All kinds of people, both within and outside of the engineering industry will continue to come up with new uses for CAD. The next time you call up your computerized part assembl y, there very well may be some chic fashion designer simultaneously firing up the same program for a wildly different purpose.Adapted from Soup to Nuts, by Jean Thilmany, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, January 2005.Designers and graphic designers constructed wire frames, then traced, scanned, and rendered them. Now, a single designer can generate stunning views.Tom Jin, Associate, CSP

15 Secrets to Writing a Great Resume
15 Secrets to Writing a Great Resume15 Secrets to Writing a Great ResumeYikes, theres a lot of resume advice floating around out there Some good, some not so good and we understand it has to leave you wondering about the best approach. So, where do you start? Heres a list of 15 tips that weve compiled to help you get started.Dont get freaked out Many new or experienced job seekers stress out when it comes to preparing or updating a resume. Stop stressing and seek out the necessary help you need to create a great resume that will gain potential employers interest.Get really focused Dont forget that employers are quickly sifting through many resumes, giving each just a few seconds. They should be able to immediately grasp what youre all about and what you can contribute to the organization. Focus on your key strengths that lokalitt you to meet a specific need and target specific employers/jobs. Remember, employers dont consider resumes that do not focus on their jobs specific requireme nts. They expect your resume to be laser focused to the position youre applying for. Dont make them wade through copious text to find out what youre good at, it just wont happenUse rich keywords If your resume happens to fall into an Applicant Tracking System, your resume must feature cutting-edge industry jargon in the form of keywords. Not sure what those keywords are? Contact us today, well walk you through the whole process.Be reader friendly Your printed resume must be clean yet eye-catching. Use conservative, easy-to-read fonts, plenty of white space, a layout that doesnt turn employers off and avoid instantly recognizable Microsoft Word resume templates. Theyve seen a million of them.Portray transferable skills Show the employer that your skills are polished and will contribute to the bottom line, even if youre seeking a job that is completely different from what youve done in the past.Focus on what sets you apart What special things did you do to set yourself apart in previo us jobs? How did you do the job better? What did you do to make the position your own? What did you do to impress your boss? What challenges or problems did you face and overcome? What were the results? How did they benefit from your performance? Did you leave them off better than before you worked for them?Spotlight selling points Information should be listed in order of importance to the reader. Whats generally most important is your title/position. Here is a preferred list order Title/position, name of employer, city/state of employer, dates of employment. You should also consider whether your education or your experience is your best-selling point and which should be listed first. Generally, brand-new graduates list education first, while job-seekers with a few years of experience list experience first.Dont hide your skills If a certain skill is relevant to your field, dont bury it at the bottom of your resume. List them in the summary or profile section at the top. This allows the reader to catch it in the first third of the document. This also goes for languages that might be important to the type of job you seek.State your personal brand Your career identity, authenticity, essence, passion and image should be expressed in your resume. You should also include the promise of the value you will bring to a potential employer. A consistent branded message should be woven throughout your resume that defines who you are, why they should hire you and your promise of value.Make a sales pitch You must be able to answer this question in your resume Why should I hire you over any other candidate? Uniqueness is clearly related to both branding and focus. If you convey a sharp focus in your resume, the reader instantly visualizes you in the position. If its branded, your resume immediately communicates your value promise. To take it to the next level, the uniqueness factor should portray you as the best person for the position. It should say, This person really gets it.Get rid of the clutter Dont use unnecessary dates, parentheses, articles (a, an, the). Most of these arent needed and remove the References available upon request because it is a given that you will provide references upon request.Structure stories in reverse Since your resume only gets a few seconds, tell your story backwards. Grab the readers attention by giving away the ending.Quantify Metrics that provide tangible evidence of your results thrill potential employers, i.e. Using metrics that show in percentages what youve done to increase sales or cut costs.Spell and grammar check Proofread, proofread, proofread then set it aside and proofread it again. Then have a friend, spouse or colleague proofread it again. Kill any chance of employers reading a misspelled, grammatically flawed resume.Keep it fresh Change your resume as needed, it shouldnt be this static, stagnant document thats been sitting in a drawer for the past two years. The minute you start a new job, update your re sume and track your accomplishments so you can add them.Resume writing might not be easy but dont let it overwhelm you. If you still feel like you cant do it, give us a call, were happy to help

How Introverts Can Make Friends in a New Job - The Muse
How Introverts Can Make Friends in a New Job - The MuseHow Introverts Can Make Friends in a New JobYoure about to start a new role. Its exciting because yay, fresh start, but its also incredibly intimidating.Youre not anti-social or shy, but you are an introvert and it takes you a little bit longer to become friends with people. But you want friends at your new workplace So, youre probably feeling a little anxious about the fact youre about to be surrounded by a whole lot of unfamiliar faces. Well, youre certainly not alone in this fear. In fact, we talked to five introverts on how they managed to build relationships with their co-workers when starting a new job. Heres what they suggest Take the First Few Days to Just ObserveA different environment with different people, responsibilities, and schedules is a lot for introverts to take in.So, when it comes to making friends, dont feel obligated to jump right in.Spend the first few days observing and listening to conversations in breakr ooms and around the water cooler. Keep a low profile and just watch and listen, then decide who you would like to get to know more, says Mychelle Fernandez, social influencer, blogger, and self-identified introvert.Alisha Powell, PhD, LCSW, agrees Im a travel social worker, so I have a new set of colleagues in a new office every few months. One thing Ive found helpful is to observe the office dynamic. And, she says, Observing people doesnt have to be super creepy. It just means that you do what you need to do but you also pay attention to what is around you. You listen to conversations without feeling the need to interject your point. Learning through observation is a great idea if youre shy and not sure where to start. Think of this timeframe like your planning period (and introverts love planning)- youre getting a lay of the land, which will help you better understand who youll mesh well with and the best ways to approach certain people.Start SmallFrom there, you can begin to take baby steps. Powell and Fernandez suggest starting with small talk, then moving this to a one-on-one meal or coffee.By asking for recommendations on places to eat for example, he or she may end up inviting you to join him or her, says Fernandez. Its not in an introverts nature to talk to a lot of people at once, so thats why I suggest to talk to one person at a time. Make an effort to talk to one new person a day, even if its just introducing yourself, adds Lauren Crain, Digital Marketer at Health Labs.Seek Out Groups That Interest YouThis is great advice for anyone in a new job, but especially for introverts who struggle to come up with ways to insert themselves into cliques. Many offices offer clubs or after-work activities. Choose ones that are interesting to you and dive in by asking about others days, jobs, and personal lives. At Fundera, I joined the running club- which is restricted to a Slack channel for the time-being- where runners share advice on products, races, and general tips. For me, it provided familiarity with new co-workers and a topic to bring up when I bumped into another runner, says Nicolas Straut, Content Marketing Associate at Fundera.Be Your Kind and Wonderful SelfFinally, remember that youre a smart, nice, and awesome person that people will like because they have zero reason not to.Be yourself- unapologetically. Let your co-workers know what you like I, for example, love contemporary art, so I took a fellow intern to a few galleries last summer on another occasion, a co-worker (whom Id never met) and I celebrated and critiqued our favorite writers and filmmakers for hours after she noticed one of my laptop stickers, a tribute to my favorite movie. We talked for so long that our dumplings had gone cold, says Melissa Ho, a marketing team member at Fueled.Three months ago, I joined my current company and made it my mission to make new friends despite my introversion. My top tip for fellow introverts in this situation is to remember that y our new co-workers want to meet someone who is cool and friendly. Once you start, make a good impression by smiling often and being warm when others engage you. My first week, I accidentally grabbed someone elses coffee mug and when they asked where it was in a general Slack channel, I was quick to apologize and introduce myself in a friendly manner when I gave it back. The mugs owner and I are now good friends despite my mistake, adds Straut.Did you try these and find that youre still not having luck? One thing to remind yourself is that making friends in a new job is hard- for everyone. So cut yourself some slack if youre not hitting it off with people right away. Youll get there.

SES signs up students
SES signs up students SES signs up studentsPosted October 13, 2011, by Helen Isbister Following a four-decade peak in natural disasters in New South Wales, the state government has put $6 million towards training high school students as emergency workers. In the big budget boost, students can join a SES cadetship scheme that will equip them to lend a flosse when disaster strikes. According to Emergency Services Minister, Nathan Rees, a pilot of the program has already proven to be popular with the next generation of emergency workers. Were always surprised at the number of students and young people who want to put their hand up and be part of the volunteer community that protects the rest of us, Mr Rees said. He assured parents that the young volunteers would be properly trained and fully equipped before being called out alongside regular crews to brave Mother Nature. We will train them properly, supervise them properly and equip them properly so they are the next generation of le aders for our State Emergency Services, he said. In the last year, the state has been rocked storms in the Hunter Valley, widespread flooding in the states west and north coast, and huge storms in western Sydney. Americans are prioritizing this thing over having kids, saving for a house
Americans are prioritizing this thing over having kids, saving for a houseAmericans are prioritizing this thing over having kids, saving for a houseIt used to be that by the time we were 30, Americans were focused on settling down and having kids. But according to a new survey, our priorities are shifting as wanderlust takes hold.Flash Pack, a travel company for solo travelers in their 30s and 40s, surveyed 1,000 30- to 49-year-olds through third-party research firm Mortar about what matters to them. When asked to list their bucket list priorities, 28% cited traveling to a part of the world they hadnt visited - a larger percentage than those who considered getting married, working in a dream profession, owning a home or having children a priority.54% of respondents agreed that they would rather enjoy life and invest in experiences while still young enough to enjoy them than save for a house, Flash Pack found.People are also willing to spend big bucks on travel, while simultaneously questioning whether funneling major money into mora traditional choices is the right move. 84% of respondents wouldnt hesitate to throw $4,000 at the trip of a lifetime, but 66% would balk at paying the average price for a wedding.Meanwhile, it seems 30- and 40-year-olds are changing how they travel. Though there may have been a time when it was considered taboo or sad to go somewhere alone, people are becoming more willing to be explorers or adventurers without a friend or companion. In fact, 31% of those surveyed plan to travel on their own in 2019.Some of the experiences travelers are itching to have Seeing the Northern Lights, staying on a private island, flying in a private jet, trying out an ice hotel, and climbing a mountain. All of those possibilities sound great, and not just for 30- or 40-year-olds. Tips for New Entrepreneurs
Tips for New EntrepreneursTips for New EntrepreneursBeing Your Own Boss Tips for Beginner EntrepreneursLook whos in charge now.You can be your own babo just let that sink in for a minute and then imagine it. The benefits of being your own boss are amazing. You set your own hours. You dont get hung up in committees. You decide your own dress code. And most importantly, you follow your dream.Whether you want to abflug working as a freelancer out of your home or create a brick-and-mortar store, starting your own geschftliches miteinander can be remarkably rewarding. Its also really hard work that is laden with pitfalls if you arent careful.Learn how to start your own geschftliches miteinander with these tips for beginning entrepreneurs.1. Follow your reisepassionIf youre going to take the leap and start your own geschftlicher umgang, its going to take a lot of energy, time, and money. The best way to keep yourself motivated through the ups and downs is to do what really matters to you. Buying the first affordable business that comes available just because you want to become an entrepreneur is a recipe for disaster. If you take immense joy in building birdhouses or selling cookies, do your research and go all in. Theres no promise that it will work, but when you follow your passion you know youll give it your all.2. Do your researchOkay, now that you have decided what your passion is and how you want to pursue it, you need to do some research on how to start your own business. There are a lot of things to consider Who will your customers be? How will you get supplies? Does this type of business make a profit in your area or do you need to be strong online? Before you throw everything you have into your new business, you need to take an honest look to see if it is a viable idea. This is especially important if youre trying something new. If you are purchasing a franchise, there should be a lot of material ready for you from the parent company.Go beyond the books an d talk to someone who has started a business similar to what you want to do. What were their biggest issues starting out? Frequently, its the things you never thought of that can hold you up. Ask someone who knows and can help you start out clean.3. Develop a business planOnce youve run the numbers and youre confident that its a great idea, developing a business plan is the next step. A business plan is your blueprint for making your business successful. It lays out your business concept, how you fit into the marketplace, and the details of how your finances will work.Your business plan is essential if you are going to need investors or a bank loan because theyll want to see that you have thought things through. Even if you dont need financing, a business plan is a great way to understand how your new venture will succeed and what issues you could face.4. Have a one-year planFor most businesses, the first year is spent getting things up and running, from getting the proper documenta tion and licenses from the government to finding your location (if needed). Even once you open your own business, its rare that a business hits the ground running. Its okay. Develop a plan for the goals that you would like to reach in your first year of business. Keep your sights optimistic, but realistic. Your inaugural year can be a dangerous one if you make mistakes. When December comes, you can assess your business plan and see if youre on the right track.5. Have a five-year plan and a 10-year planWhile survival might be a sufficient goal for year one, that cant be the situation for long. You need to think about where you want your business to be in five years and so on. Will you need a bigger space? Do you want a better location? Are you going to need to hire employees?Figure out just where you want this business to go and plot out your route to get there, step by step. Setting goals every five years helps you measure your success as an entrepreneur and as a business.6. Consid er your time managementLets pause for a moment and remember the self in self-employed. When you work for a company, you might punch in and punch out its clear and simple. These are the hours you work the other time is yours.Thats not the case when you are an entrepreneur. When you are trying to build your passion into a lasting business, it can be easy to lose track of your time management and get sucked into your business 24/7. Think about your family. Consider your friends. What other obligations do you have in your life? Decide how much time you can spend working on your business and hire help if necessary.7. Hire cautiouslyFew things can sink a business faster than poor quality employees. Its always better to tough it out short-handed for a while than it is to hire haphazardly. Look over applicants credentials carefully, scope them out online to see if there are any red flags, and make sure that they can embrace your passion for your business. Remember, they could be the face o f your business when youre away, even for a day.Bringing in friends and family? Thats fine as long as everyone knows what is expected of them and how they will be compensated. But again, only bring them in if they can be a boon to your business. Never hire someone just because you are connected by blood or friendship. Also, you should know your legal obligations as an employer before you hire someone. It could affect your business in many ways.8. Understand how your taxes workIts easy to get caught up in the excitement of starting to work for yourself. The freedom, the fulfillment, and the feeling of building something can be intoxicating. But, like it or not, taxes will play a big part in your business. Break it down as thoroughly as you can and develop a plan to stay ahead of your taxes. If its more complicated than you want to handle, hire a pro to help you out. Theres no way to know too much about your tax obligations. The last thing you want is to get blind-sided by the IRS.9. H ave an exit strategySo far it sounds like starting out working for yourself is a lot of tedious work. It can be. But, here comes the fun part. Think about your five and 10-year plan. Now imagine that everything goes extremely well. Your business soars and is successful beyond your imagination. CongratulationsNow what? Do you want to continue the business until you retire and pass it down to your children? Are you hoping to find someone suitable to take over and keep it going with your vision? What about a buyout? You might have recently taken on a big project that you want to acknowledge, or maybe itâs just been a while since youâve freshened things up.Regardless of your reasoning, you have every right to update your professional documents and LinkedIn profile without feeling guilty or scared that a manager or boss might be unhappy. If your boss gets that upset over a LinkedIn update, (updating your LinkedIn can be considered professional development) you probably arenât working for someone who wants to see you succeed. If youâre still concerned about updating your profile or giving off the wrong message about it, be transparent and acknowledge the updateIf youâre concerned that a manager or boss might feel like youâre going behind their back, let them know that youâre updating your profile.By coming out and telling them that youâre planning on doing an update or revamp, thereâs no way for them to feel like you were being dishonest or trying to hide it.Swing by your bossâs desk or shoot them an email saying something along the lines of âI was looking at my LinkedIn profile, and I noticed that there are a lot of projects and resp onsibilities that I havenât included, so Iâm going to be adding some additional information in the next few days.I wanted to let you know because I donât want any updates or changes to catch you by surprise.âThis shows that youâre open and respecting your boss by giving them a headâs up for what they can expect.Still feel like there could be tension about it? Frame it in a way that benefits your boss/companyIf you still feel like the update might send off red flags to your boss, put it into perspective for them.A great way to phrase it is, âI always want our clients to have the most updated information on their LinkedIn profiles so I can learn more about them, therefore I feel like I need to do the same in order to reflect that standard.âThis statement articulates that you want to hold yourself to the same standard that you hold others to, which is great. This highlights how it will benefit you as well as benefit your clients, candidates or partners, which will in tu rn benefit your boss and your company. At the end of the day, you have control of the information you put out there, and you shouldnât feel guilty or scared about updating your LinkedIn profile. If your superior is that upset about it, you may want to look into a new role where your boss/manager wants to actually see you succeed. If you are trying to update your LinkedIn profile without setting off red flags at work, be transparent about it, and frame it in a way that will benefit everyone. At that point, youâve made a conscious effort to be respectful of your peers and authority figures, and if theyâre still upset, thatâs on them.
